Banh Mi & Che Cali is a vibrant Vietnamese restaurant and sandwich shop nestled in the heart of Alhambra, CA, that masterfully captures the essence of authentic Vietnamese flavors while offering a diverse menu that caters to both traditionalists and adventurous palates. From the moment you step inside, the inviting aromas of freshly grilled meats and simmering broths set the stage for a memorable dining experience that feels both comforting and exciting.
The highlight here is undoubtedly their iconic Banh Mi sandwiches. Each baguette is generously filled with savory proteins like tender BBQ Pork or the flavorful BBQ Chicken, layered with crisp vegetables and spritzes of tangy sauces, creating a perfect balance of textures and flavors. While some might note the baguettes lean a bit softer than expected, the fillings more than make up for it with their depth and freshness. The Pan Fried Beef with Teriyaki Sauce Banh Mi offers a delightful twist for those craving a hint of sweet umami, while the Ham & Meatloaf Banh Mi nods to classic house specialties.
But Banh Mi & Che Cali is much more than sandwiches. Their pho offerings are nothing short of soul-satisfying. Rich, fragrant, and brimming with tender cuts of meat, the Special Combination Pho — featuring rare steak, well-done brisket, and beef balls — is a signature dish that beautifully exemplifies Vietnamese culinary tradition. Fans of seafood won't want to miss the uniquely textured Shrimp Pho, which combines succulent shrimp with delicate rice noodles swimming in a deeply flavorful beef broth. For those seeking spice, the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup (Bun Bo Hue) packs just the right punch, warming the palate with authentic Hue-style heat.
Beyond pho, the menu flaunts exceptional staples like the Yang Chow Fried Rice studded with shrimp and BBQ pork, and the house-special BBQ Chicken & Eggs with Rice, which delivers a harmonious combination of smoky, crispy-skinned chicken with perfectly fried golden eggs and a refreshing crisp salad. The assortment of rolls, from crunchy spring rolls dipped in savory peanut sauce to delicate NEM TOM CUON BBQ Pork & Shrimp Rolls, further enriches the experience with vibrant textures and tastes.
No visit to Banh Mi & Che Cali would be complete without sampling their sweet treats. The Che dessert and soft, chewy Sesame Balls with Taro provide a soothing, mildly sweet finish to the meal, transporting diners to the heart of Vietnamese street food culture.
Customers consistently praise the generous portion sizes and excellent value here, often highlighting ongoing deals such as buy 2 get 1 free banh mi offers and various percentage-off promotions that make indulging even more rewarding. The accessibility of credit card payments on moderate tabs adds to the convenience, while ample parking in the rear ensures a stress-free visit. The ambiance is comfortably casual—akin to a modern Asian café—with fast, friendly service that makes every patron feel right at home. For those fluent in Vietnamese, the staff’s willingness to customize orders adds a personal touch that truly sets this spot apart.
Whether you're craving a hearty bowl of pho to soothe the soul, a perfectly balanced banh mi sandwich bursting with layered flavors, or a refreshing Thai tea and dessert duo to sweeten your day, Banh Mi & Che Cali delivers with authenticity and passion. It’s the kind of place where the joy of Vietnamese cuisine is palpable, every bite heartfelt, and every visit invites you back for more.
I ordered 3 banh mi's from this place, per the Buy 2, Get 1 Free deal. The two BBQ pork banh mi's were superior to the BBQ beef one, which featured slightly stringy and perhaps too much (?) flavoring. The pork was tender and on point! Great deal with the 20% off everything promotion right now, and my total came out to be about 12 bucks. Credit card accepted on tabs above $10, which was also appreciated. I would definitely come by for banh mi's in the future!
This is a Vietnamese sandwich, pho and Chinese food outlet with a good selection of teas and boba drinks. Banh mi sandwich was good except their baguette were not as crispy and fluffy as others. Yangzhou fried rice was very good. I think you get a good choice of Vietnamese dishes and Asian drinks at a decent affordable prices and good portions. Parking is plenty in the rear of the shop. They offer order 2 get 1 free deal for Banh mi.
This is my go-to hang out place. They have really good banh mi sandwiches. They also have great noodles and rice dishes along with some of the best Vietnamese food here, like bun bo hue, banh cuon, banh uot. You can buy them to go or eat there as they made them for you then and there anyway. Don’t forget about the che dessert. If you speak Vietnamese, you can even customize what you order. They speak English but not enough to understand if you customize; hence, better if you speak their language.
I was craving banh mi and decided to drop by. They had the buy 2 get 1 free deal on the banh mi so I ended up getting 3. Each one costs $7. I also got the wonton noodle soup for $6.50 and the combo house special pho for $12.50. Bun rieu was delish for $9. They had a 15% off promo going on, which was great. They also had a bogo boba deal going on. You can pay with a credit card if you spend at least $10 for no charge. However, if you use a discovery or Amex card, they charge you a $1.50 fee. I got in line, paid, waited a bit, and got my order. They use baguette bread and don't use as much meat like in the past; it's not as fulfilling when you eat 1. At least this location uses pate, unlike the other location I went to a few weeks ago. Out the door it cost $17 something. They have a small parking lot, but it gets packed. People come and go quick though.
Great spot for breakfast – they are open earlier then the nearby bahn mi places! Got the combo and 5 eggrolls the egg rolls were very good and so was the bahn mi except the day I visited they didn’t add cilantro. Or is this typical of this place? Nonetheless, I am a fan of cilantro so I was a bit bummed my sando didn’t come with it. The service was fast and friendly ambiance that of an asian café and it was very clean inside for being open at 7am they have a ton of workers! Smell of fresh baguettes when you walk in! I should’ve read the sign bogo on milk tea! Will come back for that next time
